Confidence can be generally described as a certainty in your abilities or having trust in people, plans or the future. Confidence is trust; confidence is when you believe or have faith in something or someone. Confidence is power.
Self-confidence is believing in yourself and the abilities you bear. It is trusting in yourself. Having confidence in yourself can be likened to confiding in yourself; knowing that you can. And that does you a whole lot of good; it gives you extra power to carry out a task and the willpower to be yourself. Having confidence in yourself gives you a chance to discover your in-built potentials and gives you the platform to broadcast it.
Confidence is not a show of how much you know or are worth because there are people who are very knowledgeable but still do not have the confidence to use their knowledge; it is simply believing in the knowledge you do have and knowing that you can utilise it.
The disadvantages of not having confidence are numerous; without confidence, it is impossible to thrive in the world we live in. People will take you for granted, exploit you, and you will live below your lowest point. This is no way to live; constantly in the shadows of fear and doubt. It prevents you from being able to discover yourself fully; if you do at all. By default, the next question that follows is ‘how does one build confidence?’
For starters, you can look out for the wonderful things that you have been blessed with, those gifts that distinguish you from the rest of the world, no matter how small it may seem or how “popular” it may be. Focus on them, develop them, use them, believe in them, love them.
Do not compare yourself with others in the manner that you look down upon yourself. Take, for example, you are a vocal person; your voice is your strong point, you love singing, obviously you are not the only one, but that doesn’t take away from the significance of your gift. You have a message and a purpose; you have an audience no matter how small, amid the million and one others, you matter, and you count; there is room for you.
Above all, the best way to build confidence is to love yourself. Nobody is better than you; praise yourself, be nice to yourself, and you will be confident in yourself. You can only trust what you love. And if you are too scared to make a move on something, then stop letting fear in; kick it as hard and far away as possible from your vicinity. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision; be with like-minded people.
PS: There is a clear difference between pride and confidence.
Always bear in mind, you can and will do it only if you love and trust yourself!
