It has been too long, how are you doing? I have missed you guys so much. Let me know how you have been (really interested)
I have spent the past month or two doing some self-evaluation and just growing as an individual. There is this statement my mum keeps hammering on that I always took offence to, because I never really understood the gravity of those words; well now that I do, I decided what better way to come back here and start with the number one lesson I learnt. Hear my mother:
LAZINESS WILL KILL YOU.
And I mean that in every sense of it.
In my opinion laziness has to be fastest killer of our generation, I can’t begin to emphasize how many dreams, ambitions, goals and finances have gone in blazes because of LAZINESS. The funny thing to me is the fact that most people do not know what laziness really is.
Most people hold laziness at face value; “the quality of being unwilling to work or use energy; idleness”
I have come to realize among other things that laziness stems from a lack of motivation, self-esteem, and value. A lazy person lacks discipline and a deep sense of purpose.
Most times when we hear laziness, we think of that person who sleeps 9-5 and does absolutely nothing and truth is that this is only one face of laziness.
The battles of life start in the mind.
Other Faces of Laziness;
· A silent voice tells you not to try or try too hard, and this is comfortable.
· Laziness is the father of procrastination
· It is dressed as shortcuts
· Result-less busyness: you spend morning till night being busy. At night fall there is absolutely nothing to show for all the busy-ness. Then you begin to wonder; where did the time go? or what did I spend my day doing?
· Laziness does not allow you focus on one thing; making you do things halfway
· It prevents you from aiming high. It makes you mediocre. It tells you just aim at 55% with consolation it is above average
· It sounds like consolations; at least you did better than Sola.
· It is going to sleep after doing just 2 out of 10 tasks for the day
Have you thought, despite your ability to do all you are capable of, after putting in some effort; you have little or nothing to show for it? You only achieve a quarter of what you ought to? I know that feeling, my dear you are suffering from a severe case of laziness.
Well if you are interested in getting out of the grips of laziness then here are a few pointers
HOW TO WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST LAZINESS
1. Make a visible to-do list: the easiest way to slip into laziness is when you do not have your to-do list written down. Do not rely on; I have it in my head. That is a recipe for disaster, you won’t have any concrete guideline and would be easily swayed, you continue to add and remove things at will aka change your mind; that is if you even remember everything.
2. Ask yourself WHY: When you make your to-do list put down the reasons you need to accomplish them beside each task, knowing why you need to get things done will help facilitate your process. It will prevent you from adding irrelevant things to your list and aid prioritisation
3. Know yourself: know your strengths and weaknesses and play them up. Do not pack all your goals for 6am knowing you are not a morning person, why do you want to punish yourself? I am all for upgrading and pushing your boundaries, but you need to set yourself up in a manner that allows you grow not pull you back.
4. Start with the easiest: start small and build momentum, when you start with little/easier tasks and you accomplish them, you succeed in making yourself feel good and build your morale and confidence to get more things done.
5. Break things down: do not try to pack things on your list at once. Have you ever seen a plate heaped with food and been like “oh my goodness I can’t finish this” but realized when you take food in small portions you can eat five plates? Well same thing applies here, make your life simple, trick your brain into doing your bidding. Divide your goals into micro achievable ones and watch magic happen.
6. Find a source of motivation: this can be a person or a thing, find something or someone that is strong enough to pull you through the fogs of indecision and excuses.
7. Have an accountability partner: Find someone to hold your responsible. Someone to hold your hands when needed, push you when required and guide you when you are blind. Click HERE to read my previous post on Accountability partners.
8. Create a reward system: find a way to give yourself mini treats for every step accomplished, this way you have something to look forward to. This requires discipline because I know some people will take the reward even when they didn’t meet the target (if you lack the discipline then find someone to hand out the rewards)
9. Trust yourself: Most times we succumb to laziness because we feel we can’t do it; we do not trust ourselves enough to follow through so e give up mid-way or sometimes even before we start. TRUST YOURSELF!
There is no quick fix to laziness, you must be willing to put in the work, take it at your own pace but get things done. It takes a process. We all need a lesson in Pareto principle
There are so many steps and ways to conquer laziness, laziness can not be an excuse as to why you did not achieve your full potential.
