WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER

Hey ScribeSquad, how are we doing? Hope the weekend was good and fresh. Today I want to briefly touch on why you need an accountability partner.

I would be the first to admit, sometimes setting a goal and knowing you must get it done is usually not enough ‘motivation’ to accomplish it. Those who know me well, know I am the queen of making excuses, if I do not want to get something done then well forget it. Couple that with the fact that I have mastered the art of procrastination and God help me. This is one of my biggest struggles (my dad would probably give me a stern talk down when he sees this).

So, how does this affect you? Why am I oversharing this morning? Well, I decided to let you in on the way I have been dealing with said character flaw. ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER.

Read my previous post on dealing with inadequacies HERE

In layman’s terms, an accountability partner is someone who guides and coaches you in terms of keeping a commitment. So instead of it being just yourself and your goals; which for some people is not enough (shamelessly shading myself), you have someone else you must answer to.

I think to an extent we all have an accountability partner of some sort, someone who occasionally acts the role. However, having that one person who is your ‘commitment person’, makes it easier for you. No second guessing who to speak to or wo would have your time.

There is no shame in needing a little help, but first you need to be sincere with yourself and admit you have an issue and then find a way to bridge the gap. That being said; you must be willing and ready to put in the work. This person is just there to act as a conscience of some sort and a reminder.

SO HOW DOES ONE CHOOSE AN ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER?

Easy communication: you need someone who you know you can talk to freely, someone who keeps an open mind and is non-judgmental. This gives you the chance to be open about what difficulties you might be facing with regards to achieving said goals.

Respect: it is easy to still keep bad habits like procrastination and laziness even when you have and accountability partner. However, this person needs to be someone you know you respect, and do not want to disappoint. This needs to be someone you listen to, someone whose words hold value, else the purpose of an accountability partner is defeated.

Responsible: your accountability partner has to be responsible! Imagine someone who sucks at keeping their own commitments telling you to keep yours. This needs to be someone who can hold you up. Someone who by default is an example and not a “do as I say not as I do” type person.

NB: this does not have to be some random person or such a big deal, it could be your spouse, a parent, a sibling, a friend, a teacher. You do not have to look far away. Just make sure the person can get you where you want to be.

With all that being said; know that there is only so much a person can do for you. You need to learn to do the heavy lifting in your life. That does not mean you can’t ask for help. But imagine someone asking you to help them carry a bag of rice, and they leave it all to you, while they casually stroll, arms swinging, beside you. After a while you would have to drop the bag of rice because you have yours to carry. So, please don’t be a bag of rice.

Do you have an accountability partner? Do you think you need one? If so, would you get one?

  1. Nice. Well written post.
It’s nice to have someone to be accountable to, but like you said, at the end of the day, it’s still your responsibility to do what is required.

Would love to read a similar post on having a mentor too. wink
